The Black Princesses of Ghana missed a glorious opportunity to notch up Africa’s first win at the ongoing Fifa Under 20 womens championships in Germany after drawing one all with defending champions USA.
An early goal from Elizabeth Cudjoe has given Ghana a deserved first half lead against USA.
A beautifully struck long range shot from Cudjoe emerged too much for American goalie Henninger to handle as she was left completely beaten as the ball zoomed well into her twine.
The Black Princesses would however have to see through the rest of the game without inspirational captain Mercy Miles as she left the field of play full of vomiting.
If the girls are able to hold on and even increase their tally to emerge winners of the match, it’ll be Africa’s first win at this year’s tournament following Nigeria’s one all draw game against England earlier in the day.
Nigeria deservedly took a point from England in Augsburg as the teams began their campaign in Group C of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Germany 2010 by battling to a 1-1 draw.
In a physical encounter, England found the sweltering conditions tough going and that enabled the African nation – who are regulars at this event – to finish strongly.
The early exchanges saw Jane Moore go close for Mo Marley’s side while Nigeria preferred to rely on their strong defence and counter-attack.
In the 25th minute Esther Sunday had a great opportunity as the ball came back to her in the area but goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer was equal to it.
It signalled a bout of Nigeria pressure with Desire Oparanozie failing to convert and Glory Iroka coming close.
But just as Nigeria seemed to be getting on top, England took the lead. Jordan Nobbs was put through for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan but defender Osinachi Ohale was able to clear.
The danger hadn’t passed however with Kerys Harrop’s header at the back post exploiting a mistake by the keeper.
There were chances for Oparanozie and Ebere Orji at the start of the second half as Nigeria really began to press, two great Oparanozie runs failing to bring the scores level.
However the pressure was bound to tell eventually and on the hour came a deserved equalizer for Adat Egan´s team.
This time the surge came from Orji and from her centre, Oparanozie shot towards goal. Spencer got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent the ball rolling over the line.
After that Nigeria looked the more likely winners but England stayed disciplined in defence. Always, though, with a close eye on the dangerous Oparanozie.
With a point apiece, both teams will be looking for a maximum haul in their next outing when England take on Mexico while Nigeria face Japan. Both games are on Saturday in Augsburg.

One of Africa’s two representatives Ghana’s Black Princesses will kick start their campaign against defending World Champions USA later today in the ongoing FIFA Under 20 Womens World cup in Germany.
Just like their male colleagues did at the just ended World Cup in South Africa, the Princesses are very confident of causing a major upset beating the more fancied Americans in Dresden.
Even though they’ll be making their debut at this World Cup, the team can draw inspiration to continue with the upsets at the tournament following Brazil’s demise yesterday at the hands of Korea.
The Black Princesses came through the African qualifiers without conceding any goals and decisively beat the Democratic Republic of Congo, who had been to the last two editions of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile and Russia, in their decisive qualifying tie.
Coach of the side, James Dadzie believes even though the team will be making its rookie appearance, he is counting on team’s cohesion following the fact that the team was drawn from the under-17 side that played at the last World Cup.
Nigeria is the other African rep at the tournament and will also play England in their opening game in Augsburg.
Ghana’s Black Queens beat Senegal 3-0 on Sunday to secure their place at the next African Women’s Championship.
The win at the Ohene Djan Stadium ensured that the Black Queens will be making their 7th appearance at the women’s championship having consistently participated at the finals since 1998.
Two first half goals by Portia Boakye and Diana Ankomah put Ghana in the driving seat of confirming their spot in the Championship to be hosted by South Africa before Florence Okoe capped victory with the third goal in the second half.
The Black Queens thus finished the two-leg tie on a 4-0 aggregate scoreline after winning the reverse clash in Dakar 1-0 a fortnight ago.
Ghana and six other teams will join hosts South Africa for the final tournament fixed for September.
