Nigeria striker Yakubu turns to Turkey for career revival

Yakubu in action for Super Eagles

Nigeria striker Yakubu Ayigbeni is considering a move to Turkey with Fernerbahce and Karabukspor being his likely destination.

The 28-year-old burly striker had spent the whole of last season on loan with English Championship side Leicester City from Everton.  Leicester’s inability to gain promotion into the English topflight has left the option of a permanent deal for Yakubu up in the air, hence his decision to look elsewhere in search of regular first team action.

The former Middlesborough hitman fell down the perking order at Goodison Park after returning from an 8-month injury layoff. His decision to join up with his national team shortly after his recovery did little to help matters.

Things were made exceedingly worse by a miserable Nigeria World Cup performance remembered mostly for his close-range miss against South Korea, although he showed bravery to step up and nerves of a steel to convert a penalty less than a minute later.

Everton are unlikely, however, to recoup anything near what was then a record fee when they signed the striker, although they can take consolation from the 25 goals he racked up in his 82 appearances for the Toffees.

A fee in the region of £3-million is being quoted for the Nigerian;s services but Everton would be more than happy to part ways with half the quoted amount.

Yakubu is currently on holidays in the US after making a brief stop in his native Nigeria after taking part in the Michael Essien peace game played in Accra, Ghana.
