Midfielder Cheikh Tiote has signed an astonishing new six-and-a-half deal with Newcastle just six months after he joined the Premiership side.
The Ivory Coast international has been handed the new long-term contract as a reward for his fine form since arriving at the club in the summer from Dutch champions FC Twente.
The defensive midfielder’s consistent performances has seen him establish himself as a key player for the Magpies and was seriously linked to join Chelsea during the winter transfer period.
Tiote, who scored his first goal for the club in the amazing 4-4 draw with Arsenal
earlier this month, paid tribute to the fans after putting pen to paper.
“I am very happy today to have signed this new deal with Newcastle United,
” Tiote told the club’s official website.
“The experience of playing in the Premier League has been better than I ever hoped it could be.
“This is a great club and the fans have been brilliant – I have never known support like it.”
Magpies manager Alan Pardew
also praised the impact of Tiote since his arrival at St James’ Park.
“Cheik has been immense for us this season and is exactly the type of player I want in my squad,” said Pardew.
“He is fantastic on the pitch and in the changing room and is vital for everything we want to achieve.
“Cheik offers us strength and presence in midfield and has proved himself to be one of the best in his position in the Premier League.
“He’s adapted brilliantly to the English game and I’m delighted he’s signed a new deal with us today.”
Tiote arrived at St. James’ Park in August for for a fee of £3.5m on the recommendation of former England boss Steve McClaren who was then the manager of FC Twente.
His new deal thus ensures he remains at Tyneside unitil 2017.
