Zamalek failed to take advantage of the current poor form of Al Ahli as both sides played out to a goalless draw in tedious encounter in the Egyptian top flight on Thursday night.
The game was devoid of lots of goalmouth action as both sides packed their midfield, denying fans of the expected fireworks.
The result still leaves Zamalek on top of the league as they seek to win their first league title in six years.
Playing without a recognized striker, the league leaders relied on the creativity of Shikabala, Hazem Emam and Mohamed Ibrahim to split the Ahli defence open.
Their failure to penetrate the strong Reds defence led to long balls which also were also effectively dealt with.
Zamalek best scoring opportunity fell to Emam after just four minutes but his hesitation allowed Wael Gomaa to clear while Ahli failed the threaten in attack.
Ahli striker Mohamed Talaat had a golden opportunity to put his side in the lead just before the break but he fluffed the chance with only the goalkeeper Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed as his mercy.
Crucially, Zamalek maintained their six-point lead over their arch-rivals who are expected to reinvigorate their squad when the transfer window opens from next week.
The winter champions have 31 points from 14 games, five ahead of Ismaili and ENPPI, who lie second and third respectively.
Ahli are fourth on 25 points.
