Didier Drogba has pointed accusing fingers at Chelsea’s uncharacteristic shaky defence for the club’s slide to second spot on the Premiership log.
Chelsea have picked only four points from a possible fifteen in their last five games surrendering their league leadership to rivals Manchester United and are now two points behind them.
Andy Carroll’s goal for Newcastle followed a wayward back-pass by Alex to Petr Cech. Although Chelsea came back into the game with a Salomon Kalou equaliser in injury time of the first half , Ashley Cole was forced to head a Wayne Routledge volley off the line in the second period.
And Drogba was quick to point out the lapses in the Blues’ defence.
“We had so many clean sheets for a certain time, but now we are conceding in every game, so that’s something we have to change if we want to go back to the top of the league,” the Ivorian striker told BBC Sport.
“Once again, we created a lot of chances and could have scored maybe another goal.
“But the problem is we conceded a goal very early in the game and we had to chase. When you have to chase, you create more space and you create more fatigue as well, so it is difficult to convert the opportunities you have.”
Chelsea have been boosted with the arrival of English duo of John Terry and Frank Lampard with Ghanaian Michael Essien also set to return from suspension for their next game against Everton but Brazilian Alex is due in his homeland to undergo operation on his knee.
