South Africans are rallying support for Ghana, the only African team left at this year’s World Cup.
Local officials are distributing Ghanaian flags, and South Africa’s governing party has asked the team to change its nickname to “Black Stars of Africa.”
Gauteng province spokeswoman Nomazwe Ntlokwana says the decision to officially support Ghana is aimed at extending the buzz the competition has already generated in the country.
Ghana will face Uruguay in the quarterfinals Friday at the first World Cup to be held in Africa.
Ntlokwana says the Ghanaians carry the hopes of the whole continent on their shoulders.
Should they beat the Uruguayans, the Black Stars will set a new record as the first and only African team to make it to the last four of the Fifa World Cup.
Meanwhile back in Ghana, the populace are bracing themselves in what would be an historical feat for the West African state.
Many of them are so confident and sure that their darling team will make it all the way and even win the cup – which will send them in the state of ‘madness.’
Prominent political and social commentator, Malik Kwaku Baako Jnr says it will be necessary to declare a state of emergency if the team emerges successful in winning the World Cup.
