Augustine Eguavoen will take temporary charge of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the absence of Lars Lagerback, who is on a two-week leave, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Lagerback has been offered a new four-year contract, but has told the NFF leadership he wishes to discuss his future with his family.
Former international defender Eguavoen was in charge of the team when they placed third at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt after he failed to qualify the team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
In a communique signed by NFF Vice-President, Amanze Uchegbulam, after their executive meeting in Abuja Tuesday, the board also approved the engagement of a highly qualified psychologist for the national teams, while stressing that all the country’s will be better exposed.
The NFF statement disclosed that youth and players from the domestic league will henceforth be given a more decent chance in the Super Eagles.
The NFF also apologised to the government and people of Nigeria for the Eagles early exit from the 2010 World Cup.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after they lost to both Argentina and Greece before holding South Korea to a 2-2 draw.
